The first time I slipped it on was for a neighborhood football game. Oh man, did I feel cool! My friends all stopped what they were doing and stared. “Dude, you look legit!” one of them yelled. And I’ll admit, I walked a bit taller that day. As we started playing, every time I made a move, whether it was trying to sack the “quarterback” or block a pass, I felt like I had an extra boost of confidence, like the jersey was giving me a bit of Uiagalelei’s mojo. I was imagining myself making those big plays he was known for, breaking through the line and disrupting the other team’s plans.
Over the years, that jersey has been through a lot. It’s seen rainstorms during those wild outdoor games when we didn’t care about the weather, and it’s been smeared with mud from all the diving tackles and scrambles in the dirt. But through it all, it’s held up remarkably well, and it’s become a staple of my wardrobe, especially during football season. It’s my go-to for school spirit days too, where I get to show off my Ducks pride and talk to classmates about the latest games and Uiagalelei’s latest heroics.
Even when it started to show signs of wear, like a bit of fading around the edges and some loose threads here and there, it only made it more special to me. It was a reminder of all the fun times I’d had playing football, of the dreams I’d had of being a college football star, and of the connection I had to the Oregon Ducks through Matayo Uiagalelei.
